Eleven days. Seven tribes. One of the last places on Earth where ancestral cattle-herding cultures, sacred body-scarification rituals and ash-covered Mundari warriors still live largely untouched by the modern world. Our South Sudan Grand Expedition is the definitive private journey into the tribal heartland of the world’s youngest country — a route no mainstream operator runs, carefully engineered with a trusted ground partner we have personally vetted over three years of correspondence.
This is not a tour. It is a tightly choreographed anthropological expedition through Juba, Terekeka, Bor, Kapoeta, Boya Hills, Lafon and the Lotuko highlands, with private 4×4 transfers, mandatory armed escort, dawn access to cattle camps, and intimate encounters with the Mundari, Dinka, Toposa, Larim (Boya), Lotuko, Jiye and Lopit peoples. Every logistical detail — entry permits, photography permits, fuel, security, accommodation in the few hotels that meet our standards — is handled for you.
Why this is our flagship South Sudan expedition
South Sudan is the most logistically demanding destination RJ Travel operates. Fewer than 1,500 leisure travelers enter the country each year. Infrastructure is minimal, permits are complex, and the dry-season window (November to April) is narrow. Our 11-day itinerary is the only route that reaches all seven major tribal groups on a single trip, and we run it only as a private expedition with a fixed vehicle, a dedicated English-speaking guide, and an armed escort assigned by local authorities.
What’s included in the Grand Expedition
