Madagascar split from Africa 160 million years ago and evolved alone — nine out of ten species here exist nowhere else on Earth. Lemurs leap through the rainforest at Andasibe, baobabs line a dirt road at Morondava like cathedral columns at sunset, and the limestone blades of the Tsingy cut a stone forest you cross on suspension bridges. Roads are slow and the country is huge; that is part of the deal.

Met at Diego Suarez (Antsiranana) on the far northern tip — a colonial port on the second-largest natural harbour in the world, with a strange, faded, tropical grandeur to it. The French kept a naval base here; the British stormed it in 1942 to keep it from the Japanese.

Amber Mountain is a rainforest island in a dry landscape — cool, dripping, full of waterfalls and crater lakes, and home to the Brookesia, the smallest chameleons on Earth: the adults sit comfortably on a fingernail. You will not spot them without a guide. Crowned lemurs and Sanford's lemurs are common in the canopy.

The Red Tsingy are eroded laterite pinnacles in ochre, red and purple — a badlands created by deforestation, which makes them beautiful and damning at the same time. Then the Emerald Sea, a shallow turquoise lagoon behind a reef, and the Three Bays coast road.
