October to March — dry, clear and cool in the highlands. The Danakil is only sensible November to February; in summer it passes 50°C. Timkat (January) and Meskel (September) are the great festivals.

It is a controlled expedition: permits, an armed escort, a camp crew and a support vehicle are all mandatory and included. Nights are spent on camp beds under the stars because it is far too hot to sleep in a tent. It is demanding, and it is the most extraordinary place most travellers will ever stand.

Our private tours run roughly $250–330 per person per day: hotels and lodges, a private 4×4 with driver, guides, park fees and permits. Domestic flights on the northern circuit are extra and arranged at cost.

A 20% deposit confirms your dates and starts the permits; the balance is due before departure. All our Ethiopia tours are private and can be extended into the Omo Valley or the south.
