Drive east out of the highlands into the Rift Valley and into Awash National Park — acacia savannah split by the Awash falls, with oryx, kudu, warthog and baboon, and the Fantale volcano crater on the skyline.

On to Harar, the fourth holiest city of Islam and a UNESCO site: 368 alleyways inside a 16th-century wall, 82 mosques, and painted Harari houses. In the evening you watch the hyena men call wild spotted hyenas out of the dark by name and feed them by hand — a nightly ritual that exists nowhere else.
