5-day Somalia itinerary
Met at Aden Adde airport with your security team and driven into a city almost nobody sees. Mogadishu was one of the great ports of the Indian Ocean — Ibn Battuta stopped here in 1331 and described a rich, crowded trading city — and then it became the byword for state collapse. It is coming back, and Lido Beach at sunset, full of families and footballers with the Indian Ocean behind them, is the fastest way to understand that the story you know is out of date.

Arba-Rucun — the 'four pillars' mosque — was built in 1269 and is still standing and still in use, which after thirty years of war is remarkable in itself. Hamarweyne is the old quarter: coral-stone houses, Ottoman and Arab arches, alleys that pre-date the Italians. Bakara Market is the biggest in Somalia and was, for years, one of the most dangerous places on Earth; it is now simply an enormous market, and going there with an escort is a very different experience from the one the news taught you to expect.

The National Museum is small and its story is the country's: most of the collection was looted in 1991 and it is being rebuilt piece by piece. The Cathedral, built by the Italians in 1928 and shelled to a shell in 1989, is left standing as it is. The fish market at dawn is the best thing in Mogadishu — sharks, tuna, kingfish, landed on the beach and gutted where they lie. Then Gezira, out of town, where the water is clear.

Out along the Afgoye corridor, the agricultural belt on the Shebelle that feeds the capital — bananas, sesame, maize, and the irrigation channels the Italians cut. During the famine and the war this road carried a million displaced people. It now carries produce. A farm visit and the river, then back to the coast.
