8-day Ethiopia itinerary

Day 1 :
Arrival in Addis » Semera » Erta Ale

Met at Bole International and flown to Semera, gateway to the Danakil. Transfer toward Erta Ale with your permits, armed escort and camp crew — all included. The climb to the volcano begins at dusk.

Overnight: best available lodge.

Day 2 :
Erta Ale lava lake » Dodom » Hamedela

Dawn on the rim of Erta Ale, above a permanent lava lake — one of very few on Earth. Descend through the old lava fields to Hamedela across the salt pan, passing the camel caravans of the Afar salt miners.

Overnight: best available lodge.

Day 3 :
Hamedela » Dallol » Semera » Addis Ababa

Dallol in the morning: acid-yellow sulphur springs, salt chimneys and mineral pools at 125 m below sea level, the hottest inhabited place on the planet. Fly back to Addis in the afternoon.

Overnight: best available lodge.

Day 4 :
Addis Ababa » Lalibela

Fly north to Lalibela and spend the day among the eleven rock-hewn churches, carved down into the rock in the 12th century and still in daily use. Finish at Bete Giyorgis, cut 15 m into the ground in the shape of a cross.

Overnight: best available lodge.

Day 5 :
Lalibela » Addis » Arba Minch » Chencha Dorze villages

Fly south and drive to the Dorze villages above Chencha, where the Dorze build bamboo houses shaped like elephant heads, weave the finest cotton in Ethiopia, and make bread from the false-banana tree.

Overnight: best available lodge.

Day 6 :
Arba Minch » Konso » Turmi

Into the Omo Valley proper. Konso is a UNESCO site of walled, terraced hilltop villages and carved wooden grave markers. Continue to Turmi, in Hamer country.

Overnight: best available lodge.

Day 7 :
Turmi » Omorate » Jinka

Cross to Omorate on the Omo River to meet the Dassanech, then on to Jinka. If a bull-jumping ceremony is being held while you are here — the Hamer coming-of-age rite — we will take you to it.

Overnight: best available lodge.

Day 8 :
Jinka » Mago National Park » Departure from Addis

Into Mago National Park to meet the Mursi, known for the clay lip plates worn by the women. Return to Jinka and fly to Addis for your onward flight. End of our services.
