More pyramids than Egypt, fewer tourists than anywhere — where Nubian kingdoms built in black stone, where the Nile splits in two, and where the Sahara hides Africa’s most overlooked ancient civilization.

Sudan Tours

Sudan has more pyramids than Egypt — over 200 of them — and you will likely have them entirely to yourself. The Kingdom of Kush, which ruled from the city of Meroë for over a thousand years, built steep-sided pyramids, elaborate temples, and a civilization that at its peak conquered Egypt itself. Today these Nubian pyramids stand in the desert north of Khartoum, glowing gold at sunrise with no ticket booths, no tour buses, and no barriers between you and 2,500 years of history. Sudan is the Nile before it reaches Egypt — wider, wilder, and flanked by Nubian villages where life revolves around date palms, donkeys, and hospitality so total that strangers are welcomed like long-lost family. This is Africa’s most underrated country: vast, ancient, and almost completely unknown to the outside world.

RJ Travel operates group tours and private tours in Sudan, from Khartoum and the confluence of the Blue and White Niles to the pyramids and royal baths of Meroë, the Temple of Soleb, the Nubian villages of the Nile’s Third Cataract, the Red Sea port of Suakin, and the sacred mountain of Jebel Barkal. Our itineraries include desert camping, Nubian homestays, and archaeological exploration of sites that most travellers have never heard of.

Whether you’re drawn by watching the sun rise over Meroë’s pyramids in total solitude, sailing a felucca on the Nile through landscapes unchanged since the Pharaohs, or sharing tea with a Nubian family in a mud-brick village painted in brilliant blues and yellows, our Sudan tours take you to the Africa that Egypt was born from.

  • Meroë Pyramids & Kushite Civilization: The Royal Pyramids of Meroë are Sudan’s crown jewel — over 40 steep-sided pyramids clustered on desert ridges, built by the rulers of the Kingdom of Kush between 300 BC and 300 AD. Unlike Egypt’s pyramids, these are smaller, steeper, and decorated with chapel reliefs depicting royal ceremonies, battles, and offerings to Nubian gods. Visit at sunrise when the desert light turns the sandstone gold and you are the only person there. Nearby, the Royal Baths — a Roman-influenced water system — and the Temple of the Lion God Apedemak reveal a civilization that synthesised Egyptian, Greek, and African traditions into something uniquely Sudanese.
  • Jebel Barkal & Nile Temples: Jebel Barkal — a flat-topped mountain rising from the desert near Karima — was sacred to both the Egyptians and the Kushites, who believed it was the home of the god Amun. At its base, temples and pyramids stretch across the sand, including the remarkable painted chambers of the Barkal pyramids. Further south, the Temple of Soleb — built by Amenhotep III and often called the most beautiful temple in Sudan — stands on the west bank of the Nile in splendid isolation. The temple of Musawwarat es-Sufra, with its elephant carvings, and the ruins of Naqa with its unique Roman-Kushite kiosk complete a circuit of archaeological wonders virtually unknown outside specialist circles.
  • Nubian Villages & Nile Culture: Sudan’s Nubian communities along the Nile are among the most hospitable people on earth. Their villages — clusters of mud-brick houses painted in vivid blues, yellows, and whites — line the riverbanks between the Third and Fourth Cataracts. Visit homes where families serve sweet tea, share meals of ful medames and fresh bread, and insist you stay until you’ve eaten more than you thought possible. The Nubian language, customs, and architecture are distinct from Arab Sudan, preserving traditions that predate Islam. Sailing the Nile by felucca between these villages, with desert cliffs on one side and date palm groves on the other, is one of Africa’s most peaceful and timeless experiences.
  • Khartoum & Desert Landscapes: Khartoum sits at the confluence of the Blue Nile and White Nile — you can literally watch the two rivers merge from the point where they meet. The National Museum houses treasures rescued from the flooding of Lake Nasser, including reconstructed temples and Kushite artefacts. The Omdurman Souq is one of Africa’s great markets — a labyrinth of spice sellers, sword makers, and fabric merchants. On Fridays, Sufi dervishes perform their ecstatic whirling ceremony at the Hamed al-Nil tomb. Beyond the city, the Sahara unfolds in every direction: golden dunes, black volcanic desert, and the ghost port of Suakin on the Red Sea — an Ottoman coral-built city slowly crumbling back into the sea.
