10-day Tajikistan itinerary
Met at Dushanbe and driven into the least-visited capital in Central Asia. The name means 'Monday' — this was a market village until the 1920s, when the Soviets made it a capital from nothing. It sits in a valley with mountains on every side, which is appropriate: 93% of Tajikistan is mountain, and you feel that statistic within an hour of arriving.

East past the Nurek dam, which was for decades the tallest in the world at 300 metres and still produces most of Tajikistan's electricity — Soviet ambition on a scale that is hard to take in. Then into the Panj gorge to Kalai Khumb.

The full day on the Panj with Afghanistan on your right the entire way — donkey trains, mud-brick villages, a man on a horse, and no road on that side worth the name. Khorog at the end of it: capital of the Pamirs, 2,200 metres, with a university and a botanical garden that has no business existing at this altitude.

South from Khorog to Garm Chashma, hot springs that have built their own white travertine terraces out of the hillside — you can get in. Then into the Wakhan Corridor at Ishkashim, the strip of Afghanistan deliberately left between two empires, with the Hindu Kush rising on the far side of the water.

Deeper into the Wakhan to Langar, at the very end of the valley, where the Pamir and Wakhan rivers meet to become the Panj. Above the village are thousands of petroglyphs — ibex, horsemen, hunters — pecked into the rock over four thousand years. From here you look straight up the Wakhan into Afghanistan and, invisibly beyond it, to China and Pakistan.

Up out of the Wakhan over the Khargush pass and onto the high Pamir plateau: 4,000 metres, no trees, no soil, no shelter, and light so hard it hurts. Murghab is the highest town in Tajikistan at 3,650 metres, mostly Kyrgyz, and its bazaar — built entirely from shipping containers — is one of the strangest markets you will ever walk through.

Back west across the plateau, past yaks and the occasional Marco Polo sheep, and down the long descent to Khorog and its improbable botanical garden.
