Libya Total Solar Eclipse 2027 — Cyrene, Temple of Zeus

Most eclipse tours in 2027 will base clients in Luxor, Egypt. Cyrene offers two things Luxor cannot: a longer totality (Libya sits closer to the eclipse centreline, delivering 6 minutes 10 seconds vs approximately 4–5 minutes in Egypt) and a setting of incomparable historical drama. Watching the solar corona above 2,500-year-old Greek columns at a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in a location visited by very few western travellers, is simply without equivalent anywhere else on the eclipse path. There will be tens of thousands of people in Luxor. There will be very few at Cyrene.

6 minutes and 10 seconds — one of the longest durations achievable on land anywhere on the 2027 eclipse path. The 2027 eclipse is the longest total solar eclipse accessible from land in the entire 21st century. By comparison, Egypt experiences approximately 4–5 minutes of totality at the same event.

Choose Cyrene Eclipse (4 days) if your primary focus is the eclipse itself and you have limited time. You will still see the remarkable eastern Libyan coast — Tocra, Ptolemais, Qasr Libya, and Apollonia — but the programme is built around efficiency and the eclipse moment.

Choose Libya & Eclipse (6 days) if you want the full country. Sabratha, Leptis Magna, and Tripoli are world-class archaeological sites that most travellers never visit. This option gives you Libya as well as the eclipse — both are extraordinary in their own right.

Eastern Libya (Benghazi, Cyrene, the Pentapolis) operates with Tourist Police escort arranged by our on-ground team. We have direct relationships with the Department of Antiquities of Eastern Libya, which has coordinated our access to the Cyrene site specifically for the eclipse. Libya carries a different risk profile from mainstream destinations — our operational experience, local partnerships, and the personal involvement of our CEO provide a level of managed safety that independent travel cannot match.

Yes — all nationalities require a visa to enter Libya. The Libya eVisa (application, payment, and full processing) is INCLUDED in your tour price. We submit your Letter of Invitation (LOI), process your eVisa, and ensure approval before you fly. You provide a passport scan only. No embassy visit, no interview, no separate fee. Processing takes approximately 10 days. Travellers from the USA, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, and all other nationalities are welcome.

The East Libya Entry Permit ($600/person) is a mandatory government fee set by the Libyan National Army for all visitors to eastern Libya — which includes Benghazi, Cyrene, and all sites on both itineraries. This fee is entirely outside RJ Travel’s control. It is collected separately at the time of final payment and forwarded directly to Libyan authorities. We disclose it clearly in all our documentation — it is not a hidden charge.

August 2 in eastern Libya is statistically one of the driest and clearest periods of the year in North Africa — cloud probability at this time and latitude is very low. However, in the unlikely event of weather or access issues, RJ Travel will arrange the best available alternative viewing point within the path of totality. Any location within the eclipse path at this latitude still delivers well over 5 minutes of totality. We have the team, the vehicles, and the local knowledge to relocate the group rapidly if required.

We depart Al Bayda early — our overnight stop 12 km from Cyrene — to ensure arrival at the Temple of Zeus area well before first contact begins. RJ Travel will have a dedicated marquee, seating, and a welcome reception set up in advance. An astronomy briefing the evening before prepares you for what to expect: the partial phases, the approach of the shadow, the onset of totality, the corona, Baily’s Beads, the diamond ring, the return of daylight. Eclipse viewing glasses are provided. Following totality, the group visits Apollonia before returning to Benghazi.

Each tour option accommodates a maximum of 20 participants, for a combined total of up to 30 travellers across both options. We deliberately keep groups intimate — this is not a mass-market eclipse event. A minimum of 10 confirmed participants per option is required for the tour to operate at the stated prices.

A deposit of 30% is required to confirm your place, used to secure all hotel reservations, domestic flights, and logistics. The remaining balance of 70% is due 90 days prior to departure, together with the East Libya Entry Permit fee of $600/person. Full cancellation terms and booking conditions will be provided with the booking form.

Absolutely. A significant portion of our Libya travellers are solo. Single room supplements are available at both properties ($400 for Cyrene Eclipse, $600 for Libya & Eclipse). Solo travellers are a core part of our client base and will be fully integrated into the group programme.

Yes. Senior representatives of both RJ Travel and MTP will be personally present throughout the programme — not as passive observers, but actively involved in ensuring every aspect of the experience meets the standard this event deserves. On eclipse day at Cyrene, both organisations will be on the ground with the group.

The confirmed viewing site is the Cyrene archaeological complex near the Temple of Zeus, coordinated with the Department of Antiquities of Eastern Libya. In the unlikely event that access is restricted on the day, RJ Travel will arrange the best available alternative within the path of totality — which at this latitude remains well over 5 minutes duration regardless of exact location.
