This is not a country that forgives shallow curiosity — but rewards the real kind beyond anything you’ve experienced. The best Roman ruins in the world are not in Rome. They are on the Libyan coast — Leptis Magna, Sabratha, Cyrene — three complete ancient cities with theatres, forums, basilicas, and mosaics still intact after 2,000 years, visited by almost no one. Behind the coast, the Sahara begins: the old walled oasis city of Ghadames, the prehistoric rock art of Tadrart Acacus, and sand seas stretching to the horizon in every direction. Libya is North Africa’s last secret — and the Mediterranean’s emptiest shore.
RJ Travel operates Libya group tours and private Libya tour packages with itineraries from three to thirteen days. Every tour is led by English-speaking Libyan guides through our ground partner Azjar Tours, with full government permits and security coordination across every region. Choose a guaranteed small-group departure or book a private trip on your own dates with your own vehicle and guide. The Libyan visa and LOI are included with all tours.
Whether you’re drawn by walking through Leptis Magna’s colonnaded streets with no crowd in sight, standing inside the painted caves of the Acacus Mountains where humans left art 12,000 years ago, sleeping under stars in the Ubari Sand Sea beside salt lakes ringed by palm trees, or exploring the white-washed labyrinth of Ghadames where light enters only from above — every route crosses terrain that most travellers will never see and most operators refuse to touch. 300+ travellers. Zero safety incidents.

Libya Travel FAQ — Visa, Safety & Costs
Is it safe to travel to Libya in 2026?
Most government travel advisories still rate Libya as high-risk — and we operate inside that reality, not around it. Tourism restarted in western Libya in 2021 and the classic circuit — Tripoli, Leptis Magna, Sabratha, Jebel Nafusa, Ghadames — has operated without tourist incidents for years. Every RJ Travel tour runs with government permits, a licensed local guide, and Tourist Police coordination at all times. We have taken 300+ travellers to Libya with zero safety incidents. Some regions remain off-limits; our itineraries only use routes cleared with our ground partner Azjar Tours. Mandatory Libya travel insurance is available through IATI.
How do I get a Libya visa?
You don’t — we do it for you. Every RJ Travel Libya tour includes the Libyan eVisa ($63 value) and the Letter of Invitation ($200 value), plus travel permits and passport registration on arrival. You send us your passport copy 2–3 weeks before travel and receive the approval before boarding.
Can Americans visit Libya?
Yes. US citizens travel with us on the same visa-included basis as everyone else — we arrange the LOI and eVisa for all nationalities we can serve under our licenses. Most travellers fly into Tripoli Mitiga (MJI) via Istanbul, Tunis, Cairo, or Rome.
How much does a Libya tour cost?
Between $260 and $310 per person per day, everything organised: our 6-day Libya group tour is $1,600; private tours run from $900 (3 days) to $3,900 (13 days). The price includes hotels with breakfast, private A/C transport, English-speaking guide, entrance fees, government permits, and your visa + LOI. International flights and most lunches/dinners ($10–17 per meal) are extra.
When is the best time to visit Libya?
October to April. Coastal sites are pleasant year-round, but the Sahara legs (Ghadames, Ubari) are best avoided June–August when temperatures pass 40°C. The next major date: the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027, whose path of totality crosses eastern Libya near Cyrene — we run a dedicated eclipse departure.
Group tour or private tour — which should I choose?
Group tours ($1,600, 6 days, monthly departures) are the best value and a ready-made travel crew. Private tours cost more but run on YOUR dates, at your pace, from 3 to 13 days — including routes groups don’t reach, like the full east + Ubari Sand Sea circuit. Both include visa, LOI, guide, and permits.
Can I visit Ghadames and the Sahara?
Yes — Ghadames, the UNESCO “Pearl of the Desert”, is included on every 6-day-plus itinerary, with a traditional Tuareg evening in the dunes. Longer private trips add the Ubari Sand Sea salt lakes and, when conditions allow, the rock art of the Tadrart Acacus.
Do you offer Libya vacation packages and holidays?
Yes — every tour on this page can be booked as a complete Libya vacation package: hotels, visa and LOI, permits, private transport, guide, and route in one plan, with daily departures for private trips. Travellers from the UK and Europe book the same itineraries as Libya holidays — 3 to 13 days, from $900 per person.
Do you also run tours nearby?
Yes — RJ Travel specialises in the region: Algeria tours (Djanet and the Sahara), Egypt tours, Mauritania tours (Iron Ore Train), and Morocco tours. Many travellers combine Libya with Tunisia or Egypt in one trip — ask us.
