Early in the morning, we will depart from the hotel and set off on our journey towards Bamyan. Make hotel check-in, have some rest, and get ready to explore. Our first stop will be the renowned Buddha Niches, where awe-inspiring monumental statues once stood. These magnificent 6th-century Buddha sculptures were carved into the cliffs of the Bamyan Valley, showcasing the rich heritage of the region. Tragically, they were destroyed in March 2001 by the Taliban. However, the historical significance of the Buddha Niches remains, serving as a poignant reminder of the past. This is one of the Afghanistan UNESCO Sites.
Next, we will visit Shahr-e Gholghola, also known as the “City of Screams.” This 13th-century city in Bamyan holds a fascinating history, as it was conquered by Genghis Khan after months of siege. Despite the passage of time, the ruins of Shahr-e Gholghola continue to stand as a testament to the region’s turbulent past.
Our exploration will lead us to Shahr-e Zuhak, also called “The Red City.” These historic city ruins were once home to a thriving community of 3,000 people. Shahr-e Zuhak served as a vital defensive stronghold for the basin, protecting its inhabitants and showcasing the strategic significance of the area.
Prepare to be captivated by the remnants of these ancient sites and the stories they hold. Together, we will delve into the rich history of Bamyan, gaining insights into its cultural heritage and the resilience of its people.
On this day, we will embark on an unforgettable adventure to visit the mesmerizing Blue Lakes of Band-e-Amir. This natural wonder comprises a series of six deep blue lakes, each separated by stunning natural dams formed from travertine, a mineral deposit. The name Band-e-Amir translates to “Commander’s Dam,” with some believing it to be a reference to Ali, the first Imam of Muslims (Shias) and the fourth Caliph of Islam (to Sunnis).
As we explore this enchanting area, you will discover the dominant presence of the Hazara ethnic group, constituting around 23% of Afghanistan’s population. Band-e-Amir holds great significance, as it was intended to become Afghanistan’s first national park in the 1960s. However, due to political crises and decades of war, the park’s establishment was delayed. Nonetheless, in 2004, it was submitted for recognition as a World Heritage site, and in 2009, Band-e-Amir was officially declared Afghanistan’s first national park.
Today, tourists from around the world visit the Band-e-Amir National Park each year, drawn to its breathtaking beauty and natural splendor. After immersing ourselves in the wonders of Band-e-Amir, we will journey back to Bamyan, where you will have the opportunity to explore the local market and experience the vibrant atmosphere. Finally, we will return to the hotel, reflecting on the day’s extraordinary adventures and the unique treasures we encountered along the way.
