7-day Azerbaijan itinerary
Met at Baku airport and driven into a city on the Caspian that runs on oil and knows it. The world's first industrially drilled oil well went down here in 1846, and by 1900 half the planet's oil came out of this peninsula — which is why Baku has boulevards of Parisian mansions built by 19th-century oil barons, and why it now has three flame-shaped skyscrapers. Tonight, a walk in Icherisheher, the walled old city, which is UNESCO-listed and still lived in.

Ateshgah first, the fire temple where an eternal flame drew worshippers from as far as India. Then Qala, an open-air reserve of Absheron village life — stone houses, wells, a working bathhouse — reassembled and explained. A stop on the Caspian shore, and then Yanar Dag at dusk, when the burning hillside actually looks like what it is.

Gobustan holds over six thousand rock carvings made across twelve thousand years — dancers, hunters, boats with rowers, aurochs. Thor Heyerdahl came here repeatedly, convinced the boats linked Azerbaijan to Scandinavia. Nearby, mud volcanoes bubble cold grey mud out of the ground; Azerbaijan has around half of all the mud volcanoes in the world. Then Ateshgah, a fire temple where Zoroastrians and Hindu pilgrims worshipped a natural gas flame, and Yanar Dag, a hillside that has simply been on fire, continuously, for decades.

Inland to Shamakhi, once the capital of the Shirvan kingdom and repeatedly flattened by earthquakes. The Juma Mosque was first built in 743 AD, which makes it one of the oldest in the Caucasus. Diri Baba is a small mausoleum wedged into the face of a cliff and looks impossible. The Yeddi Gumbaz — 'seven domes' — are the ruined tombs of the Shirvan khans, standing on a hillside in the grass.

Out to Fazil, where a cave labyrinth cut into the rock has been turned into a small museum, and back into Sheki for the afternoon: the covered market, the silk workshops that made this town rich on the Silk Road, and the bathhouse.

Back through the mountains via Lahic and its coppersmiths, then down to Baku and up to Highland Park at dusk, where the Martyrs' Alley looks out over the whole bay — the Flame Towers behind you, the Caspian in front, and the oil derricks out on the water.
