Where the Sahara meets the Sahel — a land of volcanic cathedrals, ancient rock art, and nomadic cultures untouched by modern tourism.

Chad Tours

Chad is raw Africa at its most elemental. The Ennedi Plateau rises from the eastern desert like a fortress of sandstone — its arches, pillars, and wind-carved canyons hiding some of the most spectacular prehistoric rock art on the continent. In the north, the Tibesti Mountains — volcanic peaks topping 3,000 metres — guard hot springs and palm-fringed gorges in a landscape that feels extraterrestrial. To the south, Lake Chad’s shrinking shores still sustain fishing communities and seasonal migrations that have continued for millennia. This is one of the least visited countries on earth, and that is precisely its power: no crowds, no infrastructure tourism, just the desert, the stars, and civilizations older than memory.

RJ Travel operates expedition-style group tours and private tours in Chad, focusing on the Ennedi Plateau’s rock art and natural arches, the Tibesti volcanic region, the Zakouma National Park (one of Central Africa’s great wildlife reserves), and the cultural crossroads of N’Djamena. Our itineraries use 4×4 vehicles with experienced Chadian drivers and desert camping under open skies.

Whether you’re drawn by the Aloba Arch — one of the largest natural arches in the world — the prehistoric Ounianga Lakes glowing turquoise in the Saharan sand, or the chance to camp beneath the Milky Way in total silence, our Chad tours are built for adventurers who define travel by what hasn’t been Instagrammed yet.

  • Ennedi Plateau & Rock Art: The Ennedi is Chad’s crown jewel — a UNESCO World Heritage sandstone massif riddled with natural arches, slot canyons, and rock shelters painted with thousands of prehistoric images. See camels, cattle, hunters, and swimmers depicted in ochre and charcoal by civilizations that thrived here when the Sahara was green. Stand beneath the Aloba Arch, one of the tallest natural arches on earth at over 120 metres. Camp in the shadow of mushroom rocks and swim in guelta pools where desert crocodiles — relics of a wetter age — still survive in the heart of the Sahara.
  • Tibesti Mountains & Volcanic Peaks: The Tibesti is the most remote mountain range in the Sahara — volcanic peaks rising to 3,445 metres at Emi Koussi, the highest point in the entire desert. Explore calderas, hot springs, and palm-fringed oases hidden in basalt gorges. Meet the Toubou people, legendary desert nomads who navigate this forbidding landscape with an intimacy that baffles outsiders. The Tibesti is for the traveller who has seen everything else and still wants more — a landscape that makes Iceland look suburban.
  • Zakouma National Park & Wildlife: In southern Chad, Zakouma is a conservation success story — elephant herds that were nearly poached to extinction have rebounded dramatically under new protection. The park’s floodplains and acacia woodlands teem with giraffes, lions, leopards, and vast flocks of crowned cranes. During the dry season, thousands of animals concentrate around the waterholes in scenes reminiscent of the Serengeti. Zakouma is Central Africa’s best-kept wildlife secret, without the tourist traffic of East African parks.
  • Ounianga Lakes & Desert Cultures: The Lakes of Ounianga are a geological miracle — eighteen interconnected lakes of vivid blues and greens sitting in the middle of the Sahara, fed by underground aquifers from an ancient wetter climate. They are a UNESCO World Heritage site and among the most surreal landscapes on the planet. Nearby, meet Saharan communities whose lives revolve around camel caravans, date harvests, and seasonal movements dictated by water and wind. Chad’s human geography is as extraordinary as its physical one.
