The heart of the Eurasian steppe — where space rockets launch from Soviet cosmodromes, where nomadic culture survives in eagle-hunting valleys, and where the Silk Road left its mark across the world’s ninth-largest country.

Kazakhstan Tours

Kazakhstan is Central Asia’s giant — a country the size of Western Europe with landscapes that range from the snow-capped Tien Shan mountains to the vast emptiness of the steppe, from the surreal Charyn Canyon to the Aral Sea’s apocalyptic shipwrecks rusting in desert sand. This is where Yuri Gagarin launched into space from Baikonur Cosmodrome in 1961 — and where rockets still blast off today. The former capital Almaty sits beneath mountains that hold some of Central Asia’s best skiing and trekking. Nur-Sultan (Astana), the futuristic new capital, is a showcase of 21st-century architecture rising from the steppe like a science fiction set. And across the countryside, Kazakh nomadic culture persists: yurt camps, kumis (fermented mare’s milk), eagle hunting festivals, and a relationship with horses that defines the national character.

RJ Travel operates group tours and private tours across Kazakhstan, from Almaty’s mountain walks and the Charyn Canyon to the Baikonur Cosmodrome, the Altyn-Emel singing dunes, the Aral Sea’s graveyard of ships, the Silk Road city of Turkestan, and the Kolsai Lakes in the Tien Shan. Our itineraries include nomadic culture stays, space launch viewing, and multi-day treks through alpine landscapes.

Whether you’re drawn by watching a Soyuz rocket launch from the same pad as Gagarin, standing on the rim of the Charyn Canyon as it glows red at sunset, or sleeping in a yurt on the steppe while an eagle hunter tells stories by firelight, our Kazakhstan tours reveal the most underrated country in Central Asia.

  • Baikonur Cosmodrome & Space Heritage: Baikonur is where the space age began — the Soviet-era cosmodrome in the Kazakh steppe from which Sputnik, Laika, and Yuri Gagarin were launched into orbit. Today it remains the world’s primary launch site for crewed missions to the International Space Station, and visiting it is one of the most unique travel experiences on earth. Tour the assembly hangars where Soyuz rockets are prepared, visit Gagarin’s pre-launch cottage (preserved exactly as he left it), and — with timing and permits — watch a live rocket launch from a viewing distance of just 1.5 kilometres. The ground shakes, the sky splits, and you understand why people cry.
  • Charyn Canyon & Natural Wonders: Charyn Canyon is Kazakhstan’s answer to the Grand Canyon — a 150-kilometre-long gorge carved into red sandstone by the Charyn River, with formations so dramatic they’ve been called the Valley of Castles. Hike through columns, towers, and natural bridges glowing in shades of orange and terracotta. Beyond Charyn, Kazakhstan’s natural wonders include the Kolsai Lakes (three turquoise alpine lakes stacked in a Tien Shan valley), the Altyn-Emel singing dune (a 150-metre-high sand dune that produces a humming sound in the wind), and Big Almaty Lake — a reservoir of impossible turquoise set in a mountain cirque above the city.
  • Silk Road Heritage & Turkestan: Kazakhstan was a vital corridor of the Silk Road, and the city of Turkestan holds its most magnificent monument: the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, a 14th-century masterpiece commissioned by Tamerlane that rivals the great buildings of Samarkand. Its unfinished dome and massive portal stand as testimony to an ambition cut short by Tamerlane’s death. The nearby underground mosque of Arystan Bab and the ruins of Otrar — where Genghis Khan’s ambassadors were murdered, triggering the Mongol invasion of Central Asia — add historical depth to the Silk Road narrative. The new Turkestan visitor complex frames these ancient sites with modern museums and gardens.
  • Nomadic Culture & Eagle Hunting: Kazakhstan’s nomadic heritage is not folklore — it is living culture. In the Altai Mountains near the Mongolian border, Kazakh berkutchi (eagle hunters) still train golden eagles to hunt from horseback in a tradition stretching back millennia. Attend festivals where hunters compete with their birds against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks. Stay in yurt camps on the steppe and experience the nomadic hospitality code: beshbarmak (hand-eaten pasta with horse meat), kumis, and music played on the dombra, a two-stringed lute whose melodies carry the story of the steppe. The annual Nauryz spring festival fills every city and village with feasting, games, and celebration.
