Somalia remains a high-risk destination and every government travel advisory says so — we operate inside that reality rather than pretending it away. Is Somaliland safer than Somalia?

Yes — noticeably. Somaliland is a self-declared republic in the north with its own government, currency and visa, and it has been stable for three decades. The security profile is far lighter: no armed escort inside Hargeisa, only a police escort on the intercity roads (included in our price). Do I need a visa for Somalia?

Yes — a visa on arrival, approximately $60 USD, issued at Aden Adde International in Mogadishu. We provide the invitation letter you need to obtain it and meet you inside the airport to walk you through immigration. Somaliland is administratively separate and issues its own eVisa (approximately $60 USD) for the Hargeisa route. Send us your passport copy 2–3 weeks before travel and we handle the paperwork.

Is the armed escort really included in the price?

Yes. The escort, the security coordination, all government permissions and checkpoint handling sit inside the tour price — there is no separate security surcharge sprung on you later. This is the single largest cost of operating in Somalia and the item most operators quote separately. It is also why a Somalia tour costs $620–750 per day rather than the $250 you’d pay in a normal country.

How much does a Somalia tour cost?

Between $620 and $750 per person per day, everything organised. Our 5-day Mogadishu tour is from $3,740 per person for two travellers, dropping to $2,430 per person at seven; the 7-day Somaliland and Grand tours run from $4,980 per person for two. That includes the armed escort, hotels on full board, private transport, guide, permits and your visa letter. International flights, the visa fee itself and the Grand route’s domestic flights are extra.

When is the best time to visit Somalia?

October to April. Avoid the Gu rains (April–June) and the peak coastal heat of summer. Laas Geel and the Somaliland highlands are comfortable through most of the year, and the Indian Ocean coast is at its best in the northern winter.
