The teardrop of India — where ancient kingdoms hide in jungle canopies, where tea plantations cascade down misty highlands, and where leopards, elephants, and whales share an island smaller than Ireland.

Sri Lanka Tours

Sri Lanka packs more into a small island than most continents manage. In a single day you can explore a 2,000-year-old Buddhist dagoba, climb through cloud forest to a colonial tea plantation, watch elephants bathe in a jungle river, and end on a palm-fringed beach where sea turtles nest. The ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa — with their colossal Buddhas, sacred bo trees, and reservoir systems that still function after two millennia — rival Angkor Wat for ambition and beauty. Sigiriya, the Lion Rock fortress, rises from the jungle plain like something from a dream: a 5th-century palace built atop a 200-metre volcanic plug, its walls still bearing the world’s oldest known landscape paintings. And the diversity of wildlife — leopards in Yala, elephants in Udawalawe, blue whales off Mirissa — is extraordinary for an island this size.

RJ Travel operates group tours and private tours across Sri Lanka, from the Cultural Triangle of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Dambulla to the hill country of Ella and Nuwara Eliya, the wildlife parks of Yala and Wilpattu, and the southern and eastern beaches. Our itineraries include the famous Kandy-Ella train journey, whale watching expeditions, temple visits, and stays in converted colonial tea estates.

Whether you’re drawn by the golden frescoes of Dambulla Cave Temple, the mist-wrapped tea fields of the central highlands, or the chance to see a leopard stalk through the scrubland of Yala at dawn, our Sri Lanka tours prove that the world’s best journeys don’t require the biggest maps.

  • Ancient Kingdoms & Sacred Cities: Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle contains ruins that span over two thousand years of Buddhist civilization. Climb Sigiriya’s Lion Rock — a fortress-palace built by a parricidal king with frescoes of celestial maidens still glowing on the cliff face. Explore Polonnaruwa’s medieval ruins: the Gal Vihara’s four Buddhas carved from a single granite face are among the finest stone sculptures in Asia. Visit Anuradhapura’s sacred city, where the Sri Maha Bodhi — grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment — has been tended without interruption for 2,300 years. Dambulla’s cave temples hold 153 Buddha statues beneath painted ceilings that drip with colour.
  • Hill Country & Tea Plantations: The central highlands of Sri Lanka are a world apart — cool, misty, and carpeted with tea bushes that glow emerald green against red earth. Ride the Kandy-to-Ella train, widely considered one of the most beautiful railway journeys on earth, as it curves through tunnels, over Nine Arch Bridge, and past waterfalls that plunge into valleys of tea and jungle. Visit a working tea factory in Nuwara Eliya to see how Ceylon tea is still produced by hand. Hike to Horton Plains and World’s End — a sheer cliff that drops 880 metres into the plains below. The hill country is Sri Lanka’s soul: quiet, green, and timeless.
  • Leopards, Elephants & Blue Whales: Sri Lanka has the highest density of leopards in the world — and Yala National Park is the best place on earth to see them. Watch a leopard drape itself across a rock in the golden afternoon light while spotted deer freeze in the scrub below. In Udawalawe, herds of wild elephants — sometimes two hundred strong — gather around the reservoir at dusk. Off the southern coast at Mirissa, blue whales — the largest animals that have ever lived — breach and blow within sight of shore. For a single small island to offer this range of megafauna is nothing short of miraculous.
  • Beaches, Temples & Living Buddhism: Sri Lanka’s coastline offers everything from surf breaks to snorkelling reefs to deserted coves. Unawatuna and Mirissa on the south coast are palm-fringed classics. Arugam Bay on the east is a world-class surf destination. Trincomalee in the northeast offers pristine beaches and the ancient Koneswaram temple perched on a cliff above the Indian Ocean. Throughout the island, Buddhism is not heritage — it is daily practice. Watch monks chant at dawn in the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, where a relic of the Buddha has been venerated for over 1,600 years. Sri Lanka’s spiritual and natural beauty are inseparable.
