Crossing in from the south, with a stop at Hissar — a fortress gate rebuilt so many times it is more idea than building, but the site is 2,500 years old and stood on the road between Samarkand and India. Then on to Dushanbe, whose name simply means 'Monday': it was a village known only for its Monday market until the Soviets decided it would be a capital and built one.

The National Museum holds the Sleeping Buddha of Ajina Tepa — thirteen metres long, the largest in Central Asia, excavated from a Buddhist monastery in a country now 96% Muslim, and a reminder that this was Buddhist for centuries before it was anything else.
