4-day Tunisia itinerary

Day 1 :
Arrival in Tunis » Airport meet & greet » Transfer to Hammamet

Met at Tunis and driven down to Hammamet on the coast. Tunisia is small, and that is its advantage: you can stand in a Roman amphitheatre, a Berber cave house and the Sahara within three days of each other. Hammamet has a walled medina on the sea and the beach the country was built on.

Overnight: 4-star hotel.

Day 2 :
El Jem Colosseum » Matmata » Douz

El Jem is the third-largest Roman amphitheatre ever built and the best preserved in Africa — it seated 35,000 in a town that can never have had that many people, and you can walk the underground chambers where the animals and the condemned waited. Then Matmata, where Berbers dug their houses down into the ground: a courtyard pit with rooms cut into the sides, cool in summer, warm in winter. One of them is the Lars homestead from Star Wars, and it is now a hotel. On to Douz, on the edge of the Sahara.

Overnight: 4-star hotel.

Day 3 :
Chebika » Tamerza » Mides » Gafsa » Hammamet

The mountain oases on the Algerian border: Chebika clings to a cliff above a palm gorge; Tamerza was abandoned after three days of rain in 1969 destroyed it, and the empty village is still standing; Mides sits on the lip of a canyon that drops straight down. The English Patient was filmed here. Then the long road back east.

Overnight: 4-star hotel.

Day 4 :
Carthage » Sidi Bou Said » Bardo Museum » Airport transfer » Departure

Carthage in the morning — the Antonine Baths, the Punic ports, the hill Rome levelled in 146 BC — then Sidi Bou Said, blue and white above the sea. If there is time, the Bardo and its Roman mosaics, the finest collection anywhere. Then the airport. End of our services.
