Where Carthage challenged Rome, where Star Wars was filmed in the Sahara, and where Mediterranean charm meets North African soul in the crossroads of civilizations.

Tunisia Tours

Tunisia is North Africa’s most compact treasure chest — a country smaller than Florida that contains Carthaginian ruins, Roman amphitheatres, Saharan oases, Mediterranean beaches, Star Wars film sets, and some of the finest Islamic architecture in the Maghreb. The ruins of Carthage — Hannibal’s ancient capital — overlook the Gulf of Tunis. El Jem’s colosseum, the third largest in the Roman world, stands virtually intact in the Sahel plains. The medina of Tunis — a UNESCO World Heritage labyrinth — has been continuously inhabited since the 7th century. And in the south, the Sahara begins with a grandeur that belies Tunisia’s size: the troglodyte dwellings of Matmata (Luke Skywalker’s childhood home), the mountain oases of Chebika and Tamerza, and the Grand Erg Oriental’s sand dunes stretching into Algeria.

RJ Travel operates group tours and private tours across Tunisia, from the capital Tunis and the ruins of Carthage to El Jem’s colosseum, the holy city of Kairouan, the Saharan oases and Star Wars locations, Djerba Island, the troglodyte villages of Matmata, and the blue-and-white clifftop village of Sidi Bou Said. Our itineraries combine archaeological exploration with Saharan adventure and Mediterranean relaxation.

Whether you’re drawn by standing in El Jem’s colosseum imagining gladiatorial combat beneath the North African sun, visiting the set where Tatooine was brought to life in the Saharan south, or sipping mint tea in Sidi Bou Said as the Mediterranean sparkles below, our Tunisia tours reveal the most accessible and diverse country in North Africa.

  • Carthage, El Jem & Roman Heritage: Tunisia was the heartland of two of antiquity’s greatest civilizations. Carthage — once Rome’s most feared rival — spread across the hills above the Gulf of Tunis, and its ruins (Punic ports, tophet sanctuary, Roman baths) still reveal the ambition of Hannibal’s people. El Jem’s amphitheatre is Tunisia’s most spectacular Roman monument — a 35,000-seat colosseum standing almost complete in the middle of a small town, its acoustics so perfect that concerts are still held there. Dougga, perched on a hilltop in the interior, is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in Africa — its theatre, temples, and mosaics rival anything in Italy. The Bardo Museum in Tunis holds the finest collection of Roman mosaics in the world.
  • Saharan Oases & Star Wars Locations: Southern Tunisia is where the Sahara makes its dramatic entrance. The mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza, and Mides cascade with waterfalls and palm groves at the edge of the desert. The salt lake of Chott el Jerid shimmers with mirages that fooled ancient travellers. And the troglodyte homes of Matmata — underground dwellings carved into soft rock — were used as the set for Luke Skywalker’s home on Tatooine in the original Star Wars. The abandoned set of Mos Espa near Tozeur still stands in the desert sand, a surreal intersection of science fiction and Saharan reality. Camp in the Grand Erg Oriental’s dunes and watch the stars from silence so complete it rings.
  • Kairouan & Islamic Heritage: Kairouan is the fourth holiest city in Islam — and its Great Mosque, founded in 670 AD, is one of the oldest and most important mosques in the Muslim world. Its forest of recycled Roman columns, its massive minaret, and its prayer hall of hushed devotion represent the arrival of Islam in North Africa at its most architecturally powerful. The medina of Tunis — a UNESCO maze of souks, mosques, madrasas, and fondouks — has been a centre of commerce and learning for over a thousand years. And the Zaytuna Mosque at its heart is one of the great teaching mosques of the Islamic world. Tunisia’s Islamic heritage is as rich and layered as its Roman past.
  • Sidi Bou Said, Djerba & Mediterranean Life: Sidi Bou Said is Tunisia’s most photogenic village — whitewashed houses with blue doors and window grilles tumbling down a cliff above the Gulf of Tunis, bougainvillea spilling over every wall. Sip mint tea with pine nuts at Café des Nattes and watch the Mediterranean turn gold at sunset. Djerba Island, connected to the mainland by a Roman causeway, offers sandy beaches, the ancient El Ghriba Synagogue (one of the oldest in Africa), and a relaxed island culture that blends Berber, Arab, and Jewish traditions. The Cap Bon peninsula north of Tunis provides vineyards, fishing ports, and Kerkouane — the only intact Punic city ever found, a UNESCO site of haunting beauty on a windswept cliff.
