5-day Tajikistan itinerary
Met at Dushanbe and driven into the least-visited capital in Central Asia. The name means 'Monday' — this was a market village until the 1920s, when the Soviets made it a capital from nothing. It sits in a valley with mountains on every side, which is appropriate: 93% of Tajikistan is mountain, and you feel that statistic within an hour of arriving.
Overnight: hotel / mountain guest house.
Up into the Fann Mountains to Iskanderkul, the lake named for Alexander — local legend insists his horse Bucephalus drowned in it and still walks out on moonlit nights. It is glacial, turquoise, at 2,200 metres, ringed by bare rock, and a short walk downstream is a waterfall the Tajiks call the Fann Niagara. It is the most beautiful easily reached place in the country.
Overnight: hotel / mountain guest house.
West to Panjakent, the Sogdian city the Arabs burned in 722 AD when its last ruler made a stand and lost. The wall paintings pulled out of the ruins — feasting, harp players, a scene from the Iliad — are the finest surviving Sogdian art, and they show a literate, cosmopolitan trading civilisation that was erased almost completely. Samarkand is sixty kilometres away, across a border.
Overnight: hotel / mountain guest house.
North over the Shahriston pass and down into the Fergana Valley to Khujand — Alexandria Eschate, the furthest city Alexander founded. The Panjshanbe Bazaar under its blue-tiled hall is one of the great markets of Central Asia, and the fortress museum tells the story of a place besieged in turn by Alexander, Genghis Khan and the Tsar's army.
Overnight: hotel / mountain guest house.
South through the Anzob tunnel — known to travellers, with feeling, as the Tunnel of Death before it was finally finished properly — and back to Dushanbe for your flight. End of our services.
