Mosul full-day trip from Erbil in Iraq

1 Day

While many people would not think of visiting Mosul after being liberated, there are, in fact, those who like to experience history in its present form. When we travel, we should always make sure to visit ancient sites, but in Mosul, ISIS intentionally destroyed some of these historical buildings. Other Mosul attractions were damaged because they were exposed in the middle of bombardments and explosions. In addition to old critical structures, the fundamentalist group destroyed buildings with low historical significance but remarkably relevant culturally and to the community. Mausoleums, cemeteries, Shiite mosques, libraries, churches, and institutional, educational facilities, like the University of Mosul, were used for military purposes.

Mosul was established on top of an Assyrian fortress, but traces of human occupation date back at least 8,000 years. In old times the city was part of the Assyrian civilization and was formerly its capital. In the 6th century BC, it was an influential Persian trading base. After the collapse of the empire of Alexander the Great, it shifted part of the new political power, the Seleucid Empire.

On 10 June, the Islamic State dominated Mosul entirely. The ill-prepared Iraqi state forces couldn’t stop them. Baghdad’s requests to the Iraqi Kurds decreed to advance their army, the dynamic Peshmerga, to help the city were in vain. Two years of occupation will happen, which will only end in 2017. In the meantime, the Islamic State made Mosul its capital city. Unlike when ISIS took over two years earlier, the government army didn’t take back Mosul at once. The operation was launched in October 2016 while government forces and the militias that backed them began to arrange around the city. Nine months of a ferocious urban battle followed. The liberation of Mosul was declared on 10 July 2017 by Haider al-Abadi, the Prime Minister of Iraq.
