7 Interesting Facts About Libya:
1. Home to Two of the Greatest Roman Cities in Africa:
Libya is the site of Leptis Magna and Sabratha, two of the most impressive Roman cities outside of Italy. Leptis Magna, in particular, is known for its massive forum, basilica, and the Arch of Septimius Severus—who was born there in 145 CE.
2. Cradle of Ancient Greek Civilization in North Africa:
Eastern Libya, known as Cyrenaica, was settled by Greeks from Thera in the 7th century BCE. Cities like Cyrene, Apollonia, and Ptolemais formed part of the Pentapolis—an alliance of five powerful city-states.
3. Ghadames – The Pearl of the Desert:
The oasis town of Ghadames, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a living example of Saharan-Berber architecture. Its covered alleys and mudbrick homes offer natural insulation and represent centuries of desert adaptation.
4. Diverse Historical Layers:
From Phoenician and Roman ruins along the coast to Byzantine churches carved into cliffs, Libya’s history spans civilizations that left architectural and cultural footprints across the country.
5. Tuareg and Amazigh Heritage:
The Jebel Nafusa mountains and southern desert regions are home to Libya’s indigenous Amazigh (Berber) and Tuareg communities. Their unique traditions, languages, and architecture remain central to Libyan identity today.
6. Strategic Mediterranean Position:
Libya has 1,770 km of coastline—the longest in North Africa. Ancient empires valued this location as a trading and naval hub, linking the Roman, Greek, and Islamic worlds to the Mediterranean.
7. Desert Culture and Trade Legacy:
Libya was a key stop on Trans-Saharan trade routes. Towns like Ghadames were once part of a vast camel caravan network trading salt, gold, and slaves between the Sahel and the Mediterranean.

Is it safe to travel to Libya with RJ Travel?
Yes. RJ Travel operates in full coordination with the Libyan Tourist Police and licensed local partners, ensuring all trips are authorized, legal, and escorted. Our guides, logistics, and permits are officially registered and updated for each trip. All routes are approved for tourism and are continually assessed for safety.
What visa is required, and do you handle the process for me?
Yes — we manage the entire visa process on your behalf. All travelers need a Libya eVisa, which must be supported by a Letter of Invitation (LOI) issued by us. The LOI (valued at $200 USD) and the $63 USD eVisa fee are both included in your booking and fully handled by RJ Travel. You don’t need to apply or pay anything separately — we submit and process everything for you through the Libyan government portal. Your visa will be ready in about 10 days.
Please note: Both the LOI and visa fee are non-refundable in case of visa denial, as they are paid directly to Libyan authorities.

Tips for guides, drivers, and support staff
Souvenirs, personal expenses, and any services not explicitly listed under “Included”
When should I book, and how far in advance do I need to start?
You must book at least 1.5 to 2 months in advance due to LOI processing, visa application and processing, travel permits, internal security coordination, and flight scheduling. Do not book international flights until we confirm all internal services.
Are there any extra mandatory fees?
Yes. If you’re traveling to East Libya (e.g. Cyrene or Benghazi), you must pay a $500 military clearance fee after visa approval. This is non-refundable and paid directly to Libyan military authorities.
Can travelers from the USA, UK, or EU join your tours?
Absolutely. However, some nationalities—including USA, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Russia, and China—are required by law to have an armed escort in addition to the Tourist Police. This will affect the final tour cost and will be quoted before confirmation.
How can I stay connected in Libya?
You can buy a Libyana or Almadar SIM card at Tripoli Airport for 4G mobile data. Wi-Fi in hotels may be slow or unstable, so don’t rely on it for uploads or video calls. A power bank and offline maps are recommended.
What happens if my visa is denied or my plans change?
To begin issuing your Letter of Invitation (LOI) and to apply for your Libya eVisa, you must first pay your booking deposit. This deposit covers the cost of essential non-refundable services, including:
LOI issuance – $200 USD
Libya eVisa application and payment – $63 USD
Any additional admin or coordination costs already incurred
If your visa is denied, or if you cancel before the visa is processed, these amounts will be retained from your deposit. If your deposit is equal to or lower than the total of these non-refundable services, the full deposit will be retained. The remaining balance (if any) will be refunded taking into account our cancellation policy.
In addition, the $600 USD East Libya Military Entry Fee (if applicable) is non-refundable under any circumstance, as it is paid directly to Libyan military authorities.
We highly recommend securing travel insurance that covers visa denial, trip cancellation, and non-refundable fees—especially when traveling to Libya, where entry is subject to government approval.
