The hermit kingdom of Central Asia — where a flaming gas crater burns in the desert, where marble cities gleam in the sun, and where the Silk Road’s most mysterious chapter awaits behind the world’s most closed borders.

Turkmenistan Tours

Turkmenistan is the North Korea of Central Asia — except with better architecture, friendlier people, and a flaming hole in the desert that has been burning since 1971. The Darvaza Gas Crater, known as the “Door to Hell,” is a 70-metre-wide pit of fire in the Karakum Desert that was accidentally created by Soviet geologists and has burned continuously for over fifty years. But Turkmenistan is far more than its most famous Instagram spot. Ashgabat, the capital, is the most surreal city in Central Asia: an entire metropolis rebuilt in white marble, gold domes, and enormous monuments dedicated to the cult of personality of its former and current presidents. The ancient Silk Road city of Merv — once one of the largest cities in the world — lies in ruins on the eastern plains. And the Karakum Desert itself, covering eighty percent of the country, hides Dino footprints, canyon oases, and Turkmen nomadic culture that has survived every empire that tried to cross this land.

RJ Travel operates group tours and private tours in Turkmenistan, from Ashgabat’s marble avenues and the ancient ruins of Merv and Nisa to the Darvaza Gas Crater, the canyon of Yangykala, the underground lake of Köw-Ata, and the Tolkuchka horse market. Our itineraries navigate the country’s strict permit system and offer a rare window into one of the world’s most isolated nations.

Whether you’re drawn by the hellish glow of Darvaza at midnight, the eerie beauty of Ashgabat’s empty marble boulevards, or the chance to visit the ruins of a city that was once larger than Damascus, our Turkmenistan tours are for travellers who collect countries most people have never heard of — and come back with stories no one will believe.

  • Darvaza Gas Crater & Karakum Desert: The Darvaza Gas Crater — the “Door to Hell” — is Central Asia’s most otherworldly sight: a seventy-metre-wide pit of roaring fire in the middle of the Karakum Desert, burning day and night since Soviet geologists set it alight in 1971 to prevent methane spread. Camp on its rim at night and watch the flames dance against the stars in total desert silence. The Karakum itself covers most of Turkmenistan — an ocean of sand that conceals dinosaur footprints at Kugitang, the colourful canyon cliffs of Yangykala, and the underground lake of Köw-Ata where warm mineral water fills a cavern beneath the desert floor.
  • Ashgabat’s Marble Madness: Ashgabat holds the Guinness World Record for the most marble-clad buildings in the world — and walking its boulevards feels like being inside a dictator’s architectural fever dream. Golden statues of former president Saparmurat Niyazov rotate to follow the sun. The Wedding Palace resembles an eight-pointed star. The Alem Entertainment Center holds the world’s largest enclosed Ferris wheel. And the Earthquake Monument commemorates the 1948 disaster that destroyed the city with a golden bull balancing the earth on its horns. Ashgabat is bizarre, beautiful, unsettling, and absolutely unforgettable — a city that must be seen to be believed.
  • Ancient Merv & Silk Road Ruins: Merv was one of the great cities of the ancient world — a Silk Road oasis that at its peak in the 12th century was among the largest cities on earth, with a population exceeding half a million. Today the ruins sprawl across the desert near Mary: the Great Kyz Kala (a corrugated fortress of unique design), the Sultan Sanjar mausoleum (still standing after 900 years), and the layers of city walls that mark Achaemenid, Sassanid, Arab, and Seljuk occupation. Nearby, the Parthian fortress of Nisa — a UNESCO World Heritage site — was the first capital of the empire that defeated Rome. These ruins are lonely, windswept, and magnificent.
  • Turkmen Culture & Akhal-Teke Horses: Turkmenistan’s national animal is the Akhal-Teke — a horse breed of extraordinary beauty, famous for its metallic golden coat that shimmers in the desert light. Visit the state horse farms where these “heavenly horses” are bred and trained, and understand why they have been prized by kings from Alexander to the Chinese emperors. At the Tolkuchka Bazaar outside Ashgabat, experience the country’s finest carpet market — Turkmen carpets are among the most sought-after in the world, and the patterns encode tribal identity. Meet Turkmen families in traditional yurts, share green tea and flatbread, and glimpse a culture that revolves around horses, carpets, and desert survival.
