The cradle of humanity itself — where rock-hewn churches descend into the earth, where coffee was born, and where civilizations older than Greece left their mark in stone and fire.

Ethiopia Tours

Ethiopia is where human history begins — literally. The 3.2-million-year-old bones of Lucy were found in the Afar Depression, and the Omo Valley’s tribal cultures represent some of the last unbroken links to humanity’s earliest social structures. But Ethiopia is far more than origin story. The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela — eleven medieval sanctuaries carved straight down into volcanic tuff — are one of the most astonishing achievements in the history of architecture. The ruined castles of Gondar earned it the name “the Camelot of Africa.” The ancient obelisks of Aksum mark the capital of a trading empire that rivalled Rome. And the Simien Mountains — Ethiopia’s dramatic escarpment — harbour gelada baboons, Ethiopian wolves, and some of the most spectacular trekking on the continent.

RJ Travel operates group tours and private tours across Ethiopia, from the Historic Route of Lalibela, Gondar, and Aksum to the Danakil Depression — the hottest place on earth — the tribal communities of the Omo Valley, the Simien and Bale Mountains, and the ancient walled city of Harar. Our itineraries include coffee ceremonies, church festivals, trekking expeditions, and cultural immersions with communities whose traditions predate written history.

Whether you’re drawn by the sight of a priest emerging from Lalibela’s Bet Giyorgis at dawn carrying a golden processional cross, the bubbling sulphur pools of the Danakil Depression, or the painted faces of the Karo and Mursi peoples in the Omo Valley, our Ethiopia tours reveal the country where civilization learned to walk — and never stopped moving.

  • Rock-Hewn Churches & the Historic Route: Lalibela’s eleven rock-hewn churches are not built — they are excavated. Carved straight down into living rock in the 12th century, they remain active places of worship where white-robed priests chant liturgies in Ge’ez, the ancient Ethiopian language. Bet Giyorgis — the cruciform church carved into a pit — is one of the most photographed buildings in Africa, but nothing prepares you for seeing it in person. The Historic Route continues to Gondar’s Royal Enclosure of castles and bathhouses, Aksum’s towering stelae and the claimed resting place of the Ark of the Covenant, and the Blue Nile Falls thundering into a gorge of spray and rainbow.
  • Simien Mountains & Ethiopian Wildlife: The Simien Mountains are Africa’s most dramatic escarpment — a wall of jagged peaks, deep gorges, and 1,500-metre cliff drops that earned UNESCO World Heritage status. Trek along the escarpment edge past troops of gelada baboons — the world’s only grass-eating primates — sitting in groups of hundreds on the cliff tops. Search for the critically endangered Ethiopian wolf and the Walia ibex. In the south, the Bale Mountains harbour Harenna Forest, Africa’s second-largest cloud forest, where giant ferns and bamboo create a world that feels Jurassic.
  • Omo Valley & Tribal Cultures: The lower Omo Valley is home to more than a dozen distinct tribal groups whose body painting, scarification, lip plates, and ceremonial traditions have continued for millennia. Meet the Mursi, known for their clay lip plates and stick fighting duels. Visit the Hamer people during their bull-jumping ceremony — a rite of passage that marks the transition to manhood. Photograph the Karo’s spectacular body and face painting using natural pigments from the riverbank. These are not museum displays — they are living cultures navigating modernity on their own terms, and our visits are conducted with respect and local partnership.
  • Coffee Birthplace & Danakil Depression: Ethiopia is where coffee was discovered — legend says by a goat herder named Kaldi in the forests of Kaffa — and the coffee ceremony remains the country’s most sacred social ritual. Watch beans roasted on a charcoal brazier, ground by hand, and brewed three times while frankincense curls through the air. At the other extreme, the Danakil Depression is the lowest, hottest, and most alien landscape on earth: sulphur springs in neon yellow and green, salt lakes, active volcanoes, and Afar salt caravans that have crossed this inferno for centuries. Ethiopia contains the full spectrum of the planet’s possibilities.
