11-day Tajikistan itinerary
Met at Dushanbe and driven into the least-visited capital in Central Asia. The name means 'Monday' — this was a market village until the 1920s, when the Soviets made it a capital from nothing. It sits in a valley with mountains on every side, which is appropriate: 93% of Tajikistan is mountain, and you feel that statistic within an hour of arriving.

North into the Fann Mountains, the range Central Asian climbers rate above almost anything else: granite, forty lakes, peaks over 5,000 metres. Artuch is the trailhead. From here the roads stop and the walking starts.

Up to the Kulikalon basin, a bowl of interconnected lakes at 2,800 metres with the wall of Mirali and Maria rising behind them. The water is an almost implausible blue. Shepherds bring their flocks up here in summer, and the camp is as much theirs as yours.

Over the Alauddin pass at 3,860 metres — a hard morning, and worth every step — and down to the Alauddin lakes on the far side. Chimtarga, at 5,489 metres the highest peak in the Fann, stands directly above the camp.

A short but steep day up to the Mutnye lakes at 3,500 metres, the last camp before the pass. They are grey with glacial flour, which is where the name comes from, and the amphitheatre of peaks around them is the finest in the range.

The pass. It is 4,750 metres, it takes most of the day, and at the top you are standing higher than anywhere in western Europe, with the Fann Mountains spread out in every direction and Chimtarga itself immediately above you.

Down the far side — long, loose and knee-punishing — to Bolshoi Allo, a lake formed when an earthquake dropped half a mountain into the valley in 1911. It sits behind that rockfall, deep green, at 3,150 metres.

A rest and exploration day around Allo and the Zindon valley below it: the smaller lakes, the rockfall itself, which you have to pick your way across, and the first trees you will have seen in days.

Down the Amshut valley — juniper, birch, running water, and a gradual return to altitudes where breathing is unremarkable. Shepherd camps and the sound of the river all day.
